A true Billfish Grand Slam Release on Fly! Capt. Brad has accomplished such a feat, it certainly ranks high in his career highlights.
Guatemalan Billfishing Adventures - Fishing Report – Nov #1, 2019
The beginning of our Fishing Season lured excellent opportunities, passionate anglers, and prominent personalities in the fishing industry to Guatemalan Billfishing Adventures. We had aboard with us Mark Hatter, who was here to document all the events from Nov 4th to Nov 10th for more than three magazines, which added to the thrill. The fishing has been outstanding with Decisive averaging a blue marlin release a day as well as double-digit sailfish releases every day. The highlights have been as many as 10 blue marlins raised in a day, 4 blues released in a day on light tackle while tournament fishing and a Billfish Grand Slam on Fly.
Team of three anglers from South Africa, Edwin Freeman, Marius de Vos and Francois Bezuindehout joined Capt. Brad Philipps on this season’s first day, and with 26 Sailfish releases from 34 bites, to get things rolling. They chartered the Decisive for 2 days of practice and the Intensity for the 3 day International Sailfish Guatemala 2019 Tournament and released 72 sails in 5 days fishing. We had the privilege of hosting them were honoured to have this amazing team aboard together.
Six Anglers & Catch and Release Numbers For Jorge Mederos from Puerto Rico: (4th Nov to Nov 6th)
The Decisive &The Intensity was chartered by a team of six anglers from Puerto Rico, Jorge Mederos and his friends Jose Suarez, Jason Borschow, Mario Somoza, Alejandro Uriarte & Miguel Lopez. The anglers released 20 sails, 1 blue marlin released aboard the Intensity & 17 sails released and missed a good blue marlin off the bridge teaser aboard the Decisive.
Team Bamboo from Miami, aboard the Decisive with Capt. Brad Philipps, each one of the three days of the ‘No Sancocho’ yielded great numbers and high excitement for all, with them the team in the lead position from start to finish!!!
To gain more points teams have the option to catch billfish on FLY during the No Sancocho Sailfish Shootout, and marlin on lighter line.
From day one of this annual charity tournament, we had the Decisive geared up for Team Bamboo to defend their 2018 winning title. This Team of 4 anglers Bill Canida, Marcos Azar, Johnny White and Chris Kavalir with Capt Brad Philipps started off great and were way up after releasing 2 Blue Marlin and 16 Sailfish, all on our Alutecnos 20’s on day one.
They levelled up higher on Day 2 with 2 marlins and 12 sailfish. On the third day, Team Decisive had a whooping 4 Blue Marlin releases on their light tackle which got their total tournament blues to 8 which secured a resounding first place position along with their total of 43 sailfish.
Rum Line held 2nd position with the Finest Kind in 3rd position.
The three-day tournament had an overall 650 raises, 538 bites, 385 billfish releases, along with 35 Dorado, and a grand total of 163 SANCOCHOS with a total of 10 teams competing!
This Charity tournament collected $7390 donations overall which will go to local schools in Puerto San Jose.
The Marshall’s – 60th Birthday Fishing Bliss (Nov 9th to 14th)
We hosted Alex and Sarah Marshall for 4 Days of fishing Nov 10, 11, 12, 13th, who were here to celebrate Alex’s 60th Birthday. The waters here in Guatemala delivered what Alex had planned, the first blue marlin for his wife Sarah, followed by more for himself!!! Aboard the Decisive, on his special Birthday, we raised 10 blue marlins, found them to be very lazy & released 2 blues from 4 bites and 18 sails.
On their last day of fishing, they released 2 more blue marlins and 21 sailfish.
We have always been privileged, to host a great many anglers who turn into everlasting friends. The Marshall’s articulate a great association & an emotional connect with Guatemalan Billfishing Adventures and they leave us feeling delighted and excited every time we have them here. They also spent their first night of accommodation at the luxurious Casa Philipps in Antigua Guatemala. Adding up another milestone to their life, the Marshalls have proved that age is an issue of mind over matter.
John Cole – First Time Fly Fishing with us (Nov 13th To 17th)
John Cole returned to Guatemala after a long absence to do what he loves, throw flies at and battle billfish on the long wand! Well, he was not disappointed! His first day saw him release a wild blue marlin and 8 sailfish all on the fly, the next more sailfish but the best was yet to come. Day three saw John and the Decisive team release a sailfish early, followed by a feisty striped marlin. Changing gears, it was not long thereafter and there he was…a 350 blue marlin came charging in…a perfect tease from the long rigger, a great cast, awesome switch and a head and shoulders bite of the fly just meters behind the boat and it was game on! Minutes later the team had released the blue and done what very very few have ever done before, released a Billfish Grand Slam on the fly! 3 billfish species, all IGFA on the fly, in one day, one angler. To sum it up, the famed Bubba Carter wrote of the team's achievement as such…’’Many many more have walked on the moon then achieved this!” The congratulations rolled in from far and wide, and all celebrated! Brad had to say it certainly ranks right up there in his career highlights.

Been really busy since getting back from the Miami Boat show last weekend, but thank you to The Billfish Foundation for all they do for Billfish Conservation, everyone that fishes offshore should really join their cause and become a member! Won their Overall Release Captain of the Year Award, my 16th time in the past 17 years to receive this award. Catching up with so many friends sure was great!
Fishing has been great! Raised 48 sails and a blue marlin yesterday, releasing 15 sails the last day of the Jake Jordan Fly Challenge to place a very well deserved second place. Usually placing second is like 'kissing your sister', but fly-fishing with only a single angler, against other two angler teams, sure made it tuff to take advantage of the multiples we saw...well done to all, great fishing with some spectacular action! We are having one heck of a season!
As he closes in on 30,000 Billfish releases, this top captain has learned what it takes to be the best in the game.
