True mastery in any profession is achieved when skill, experience, and passion combine to produce consistent excellence. For the Philipps family, decades of dedication to the sportfishing world have created a legacy built on trust, integrity, and unmatched expertise. Over the years, they have developed a vast reserve of knowledge, forged strong relationships, and established a reputation for delivering some of the finest fishing adventures in the world.
At Guatemalan Billfishing Adventures, the Philipps family has built a complete recreational fishing experience — blending five-star hospitality with world-class sportfishing. Every trip reflects years of commitment, attention to detail, and a deep respect for both the craft and the environment.
Meet the highly respected Capt. Brad Philipps and his ever-supportive wife, Cindy — a team who continue to set the standard for excellence in the charter sportfishing world.
Captain Brad Philipps is one of the Sportfishing world’s most decorated captains.
The present age of adventure calls not for generalists or jack-of-all-trades, but for those who have mastered their craft to the highest standard. Capt. Brad Philipps embodies this philosophy, with a complete command of his profession that makes even the most technical details engaging. Having released more than 40,000 billfish and counting — more than any other sportfishing captain, past or present — Brad remains as thrilled by the next bite as any first-time angler.
He has earned The Billfish Foundation’s Top Overall Release Captain award 16 times, alongside an equal number of Top Pacific Sailfish Captain honors. His career highlights include:
Today, Brad operates Guatemalan Billfishing Adventures alongside his wife, Cindy, their children Darren and Lyndsey, and their loyal Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Rigby. Whether at the helm of his 40-foot Gamefisherman, Decisive, in the rich waters of the Pacific, exploring distant fishing grounds such as Cape Verde, Bom Bom Island, or Nova Scotia, or guiding wildlife safaris in his native Africa — it is Brad’s deep-rooted sense of adventure that drives him to excel, no matter the conditions or the odds.
Seamanship and adventure fishing became part of Capt. Brad Philipps’ life from an early age, starting with beach launches during his youth in South Africa, where he developed an uncompromising attention to detail as a boatsman.
After completing two years of compulsory military service, Brad graduated from the University of Cape Town with an Honours Degree. He then spent several years fishing around the world, nearly circumnavigating the globe and releasing more than 40,000 billfish along the way — more than any other captain in sportfishing history. In 1996, a chance meeting with Tim Choate in Bom Bom, followed by a season running a boat in Brazil, led to an invitation to work in Guatemala as fleet captain for the Fins & Feathers Lodge.
“We cannot buy experience – we have to dedicate time and effort to earn it ourselves.”
When the lodge closed in 2005, Brad and his wife Cindy Philipps remained undaunted. They launched Guatemalan Billfishing Adventures — which will celebrate its 20th anniversary on December 27, 2025 — to continue offering world-class fishing experiences to loyal clients. Since then, they have built lifelong bonds with colourful personalities from around the globe, hosting some of the best family fishing trips in the world.
Capt. Brad and Cindy bring decades of international experience, delivering unmatched service to sportfishing anglers. They uphold a strict catch-and-release ethos and actively support billfish conservation. When not fishing, Brad guides safaris across the African continent, spending four months each year there with Cindy and their two children, Darren and Lyndsey.
Capt. Brad personally delights in teaching — going over each aspect of the line, technique, and approach until his clients truly see through his eyes and share his passion for the sport. This hands-on, detail-oriented guidance ensures every guest enjoys a seamless, memorable fishing adventure.
Over more than 20 seasons in Guatemala, Brad and Cindy have mastered their craft. Their steady dedication, detailed planning, and exceptional hospitality make each trip unforgettable.
Your host, Cindy Philipps — a charter management specialist and hospitality expert — oversees every aspect of your stay. Together with her professional team, she ensures your comfort from arrival to departure.
