Henk Ferreira Bio:

Meet Henk Ferreira, world class Fishing Guide/Skipper in his own right. Will do duty as one for the two Mates on “Decisive” and step into the role as Captain in late season from May, June and July. In addition to this, his position as a mate allows for time behind the lens to capture images of the amazing fishery, landscape and people of Guatemala.

Henk's passion for fishing began at a young age, deeply rooted in his family's profound connection to the water. Growing up in Johannesburg, South Africa, he was fortunate to be surrounded by a family that competed in freshwater angling and regularly embarked on fishing adventures along the scenic South African coastline in search of saltwater fish. Henk's exposure to the fishing world from an early age ignited a fire within him, and it was only natural for him to fall in love with fishing.

From pastime to a full-time profession

In 2003, Henk made a pivotal decision to transform his beloved pastime into a full-time profession. Armed with a professional qualification in photography, a skipper’s ticket and a serious love for fish he embarked on an exciting new chapter, he set his sights on Mozambique's renowned offshore atoll, ST. Lazarus Banks. Joining as a mate and backup captain, Henk's journey officially commenced, laying the foundation for a remarkable career that would take him to some of the most extraordinary fishing destinations across the globe.

Drawing inspiration from experiences

Throughout his extensive fishing career, Henk has had the privilege of encountering a multitude of vessels and captains, gleaning valuable insights and methodologies from each of them. Drawing inspiration from these experiences, he has meticulously crafted his own professional approach, running a tight ship while maintaining a laid-back demeanour and most importantly he always finds the fish. He loves the challenge of identifying the bait and predator pattern and ultimately the finding the key that unlocks the questions to getting the target species to eat either live or artificial presentations. Henk ensures that his fishing vessel is safe, well-maintained, and caters to both expert anglers and novices alike and make many of their dream fish become realities.

Deeply committed to conservation and success

Beyond his passion for fishing, Henk has always been deeply committed to the conservation of not only aquatic eco systems but in all wildlife across the board, boasting with experience gained being employed within National Parks where he was engaged in projects like Chimpanzee re habituation and coral reef establishment and relocation. Throughout the last two decades, he has immersed himself in untouched and rural fisheries, explaining the importance of catch and release to local fishing operators and educating local communities on sustainability of sensitive fishing environments.

Know-how adaptive approach makes the difference

Henk's thirst for exploration has led him to a wide range of fisheries, where he has embraced various techniques and styles of fishing. From the breath-taking waters of the Seychelles to the desert shores of Oman, from the vast expanses of Argentina to the captivating beauty of The Bahamas, Henk has honed his skills in diverse environments that demand adaptive approaches. He has also ventured into Indonesia, Australia, and extensively fished and explored along the East coast of Africa and East African Islands, including Tanzania, Kenya, and the inshore freshwater fisheries of Uganda—most notably, Lake Victoria, which boasts freshwater fish exceeding 150 kilograms.

Passion brings expertise

With expertise in both conventional and fly-fishing techniques, Henk passionately pursues any aquatic species with fins. Whether he's engaged in heart-racing teasing of bill fish and pitching baits, stealthily stalking fish on the fly over shallow flats, delving deep into the depths with heavy jigs, casting big poppers to entice surface feeders, or engaged in inshore light spinning, Henk is always in pursuit of the next thrilling bite. His appetite to find fish, regardless of their shape and size, is unending.

Currently calling Guatemala “home”

Henk plays an integral role as a mate and Captain aboard the esteemed fishing vessel "Decisive" under the expert guidance of Captain Brad Philipps at Guatemalan Billfishing Adventures. This incredible opportunity allows him to showcase his expertise, contribute to memorable fishing experiences, and continue pushing boundaries in the realm of angling. In addition to this, his position as a mate allows for time behind the lens to capture images of the amazing landscapes the fishery and people of Guatemala.

Management of the Fishing Lodge “Billfish Inn"

Henk has had his wife Janine alongside him for the last 15 years gaining her own experience specializing in hospitality and lodge management of high-end properties. Janine shares the passion and love for the outdoors and exploration and off course fishing. Together they bring a wealth of information and experience that will be applied at the Guatemalan Fishing Lodge "Billfish Inn”.
